17 Signs of Emotional Dependency

A big choice older teens and single young adults need to make in order to keep their relationships healthy is this: choose to let God have complete and absolute control over your emotions. Signs of emotional dependency are easy to see—especially to God-fearing parents and God-given Biblical authorities. Parents and Biblical authorities should be pointing this out to youth earlier than the youth can see it. Be honest with yourself as you review these 17 signs of unhealthy emotional dependency. Don't be afraid to ask someone in Biblical authority at your church like your pastor or your youth director for assistance in understanding them.

Understanding the Early Years of Adulthood - Part Five

Career Location—Where will you live? What company or organization will you work for? Will the job be solid? Will the ministry “stay afloat”? Where will your family grow up? Who will your kids be friends with? What church will you attend? What community will you live in? Who will babysit your kids and influence your family? What school will you send your kids to? These questions have enormous implications on many parts of your future and family. You must get it right. You must believe there is a God-ordained purpose and plan for all that must be discovered.

Living Quarters—What kind of place will you put your family in? How much will you have to pay? When will you purchase a home, if ever? How? What does it take to get into an apartment? How do you know what is best when you’ve never traveled this road before?

Church—Will you go to church since your parents won’t be making you? What kind? Will you serve faithfully? Will you be what God wants you to be in your church family? Will you help to bring others to Christ in that church? Will you find a solid Bible-believing church home or will you choose a compromising, middle-of-the-road, never-leave-your-comfort-zone type of place? Be careful not to follow culture's priorities and make the decision to leave the church of your upbringing too easily and without proper consideration. The Lord blesses faithfulness to His church and you will not be happy if you leave God's will in order to follow your dreams.

Personal Walk with Christ—Will you know Christ personally and stay faithful to Him in your heart? Will your children follow your faith or leave it? Will God be a small part of your big picture, or will He be your big picture? Will God be that part of your life that you run to only when you’re in trouble? These decisions will have much to do with your own personal sanity as well as the spiritual health of your family for generations to come.

Understanding the Early Years of Adulthood - Part Four

Career Field—

What will you spend your life doing? There are many noble things to do with your life. Ministry is good. Faithful Christians in secular fields are vital also. The question is not “what do you want to do?” As we’ll see later, that can be a dangerous way to think. The question is—what is your destiny? What were you made to do? What fulfills your eternal purpose for being on this planet? When you answer that question, you will be truly happy.

Chances are you know what you want. Scary thing is you may or may not be right. I mean, what you think you want may be absolutely wrong for your destiny. In which case, you won’t know it until a few years down the road—probably after you exit the mistake zone. So, you will have to make a choice, but you have no real way of knowing that what you want is what God wants. Sounds too bizarre for reality, but it’s true. The world is full of elderly people who never really found their purpose for being alive. You don’t have to become one of them.

Marriage—

Who will you marry? What kind of person will you marry—I mean, beyond “pretty” or “handsome”? Come on, go a little deeper than that. How will you know this person is emotionally stable? How will you be guaranteed you won’t end up deserted, cheated on, or left hanging out to dry? Thousands of couples every year, who once stood at a wedding altar madly in love, stand in a living room beating each other’s brains out or stand in a courtroom fighting over cars and kids. People who once dreamed of living in love for the rest of their lives now live in hate. How can that happen? What makes you exempt? No one thinks it will happen to them.

Your marriage will not be perfect. At best it will be a solid relationship that forges through trials to become a refined lifetime love. That’s at best. No marriage is easy, and no marriage just falls into perfect place. Happy marriages and lifetime loves are discovered through years of commitment and personal change. But happy marriages are worth fighting for. They are always happier after the forging process than they were before it. The whole relationship gets better over time, but how will you know for sure that you’ve got someone committed to loving that intensely?

How will this person treat your children? How will they respond when you do something stupid? How will they spend money or keep the house? What will it take to really make them “ticked off.” Just what does this person do when he or she is “ticked off”? What will he or she want to do with the rest of your life?

All of these questions are huge, and most of them cannot be answered for certain until after you’re married! Isn’t that great news! You’ll get married, and then you’ll start to really get to know the person you married. About ten years later, if you are one of the few that make it, you’ll feel like you’re starting to get to know your spouse, and you’ll thank God you followed Him—or you’ll wish you had.

Don’t freak out and say something foolish like “I’m never getting married.” In reality, marriage is awesome. It’s just not what pop-culture would lead you to believe. It’s something much different and actually much better.

The great part is God has a plan for making sure you get the right person! I'll deal with that in another post. So for now, don’t sweat it and trust the Lord.

11. Learn to make good decisions Biblically. Consider how you make decisions. Are they based upon emotion, impulse, and personal desires? Or are they based upon God’s Word, the leading of the Spirit, and the wise thing to do? Learn to do the right thing no matter how hard it is or what it costs.
12. Learn to control your temper. People who cannot control themselves do hurtful things to others. God wants us to be angry at sin but loving towards people.
13. Learn to have a great testimony. Past friendships, past trouble, present friends, dress, music, lifestyle, posture, countenance, habits, and outward appearances all impact what others think of you. This is called your name or your testimony, and you must learn to protect it. God says, “A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold” (Proverbs 22:1).
14. Learn to work hard. Life is hard work, especially family life. Even church life, if you are in a position of ministry, takes hard work. Take value in the work you do. If you wait until the last minute, sloppily do your work, and then don’t care about the outcome, you’re developing lazy character. Learn how to pour your best into everything you’re given to do. Develop a solid work ethic, and don’t be afraid of hard work.
15. Learn to take care of your body. Stay healthy, eat right, and discipline yourself. Your body belongs to God and is the temple of the Holy Spirit. Bad health habits will greatly limit your usefulness to God.
16. Learn to tithe and to trust God. If a man will rob from God, that man should not be trusted. Of everything that God gives to you, give Him back at least ten percent through your church.
17. Learn to be real and sincere. Stop playing games, and refuse to be a hypocrite. Too many young adults act one way around friends and another way around authorities. This will only make your future worse!
18. Learn to be understanding and accepting of others. Not everybody is just like you or your close friends. That doesn’t make you better. Godly people love and treat everybody with decency and respect.
19. Learn to get along with others. Some people seem to relish conflict. Like that Charlie Brown character, Pig Pen, everywhere they go they have a little dust cloud of fights, gossip, and strife following them. When there is no strife, they make it up—it’s like Dracula needing blood! They must have it. Don’t be this way and don’t spend time with these people.
20. Learn to have discernment and discretion. Discernment is the ability to perceive and see things through God’s wisdom. Discretion is knowing what to say, how to say it, and when to say it. This is the opposite of being obnoxious, foolish, flirtatious, and boisterous. It’s not having to be the center of attention, but letting God be the center of attention. For a young lady, the Bible calls this a “meek and quiet spirit” (1 Peter 3:4).

Friends—
Who will you hang around and spend time with? Who will you be like and be associated with? What kind of person do you want to become? Who will you decide you want acceptance from and why even care about acceptance? These issues are very significant. People will judge you based upon the people you spend time with. “Not fair,” you might think. Wrong. It’s completely fair, and you do the same thing. You’re human, and God makes it clear that man looks at the outward appearance (1 Samuel 16:7).
“Yeah, but God looks at the heart,” you argue.
Yeah, but man looks at the outward appearance. People only have what you give them to formulate their opinion of you. If it’s a bad opinion, it’s probably your fault. Don’t go blaming everyone else for misjudging you. Take a look in the mirror and study what you’re giving them to work with. Start with a good look at your friends.
The fact is people are right in judging you this way because you will become like the people you spend time with. So rather than looking for who’s cool, who’s “in,” or who’s acceptable, start looking for who you want to be like and be associated with and make them your friends. Hopefully, those people will be people who are faithful to God and serving Him. This decision determines who you will be like which again has profound effects on everything else—who will marry you, who will hire you, who will help you in time of trial…on and on.

20 Qualities to Pursue - Part One

1. Learn to be spiritual. Seek first God’s kingdom (Matthew 6:33). Desire to do God’s will more than anything. Be involved in winning others, serving God, and walking faithfully.

2. Learn to develop godly character. This is subconsciously doing right, or, as someone put it, “right by reflex.” This includes the ability to say no to sin, get up on time, be on time, etc. Character is who you are when no one is around.

3. Learn to be loyal. Start with God and authorities. Be loyal to your church and pastor. Learn to take a stand and to speak in defense of those who love you. Don’t put up with gossip and bad attitudes.

4. Learn to treat your family well. If you treat your parents and siblings right, you will one day treat your spouse and children right.

5. Learn stability. Learn how to be content and to wait on God. Don’t be constantly reconsidering good decisions, looking for the next fun thing, or changing your mind about what you believe. Learn to establish your heart in God—don’t have a “plan B.” Be constant and consistent—in your attitude, your service, your respect, and your treatment of others. Learn to not quit when things get tough!

6. Learn to develop convictions. Do you know what you believe and why? It’s time to establish your own convictions and personal standards (with the help of godly authorities). Learn to stand on what is right and not to waver. Have convictions as strong as those of the guy or girl to whom you may be attracted!

7. Learn to look sharp. Have a clean and appropriate appearance. Learn to dress right for various occasions. Guys—keep a short haircut, dress sharp, and avoid worldly styles. Cut your nails, wash your hands, polish your shoes, iron your shirts. Girls—be modest, feminine, and godly in your appearance.

8. Learn to set and pursue goals. Set your direction in life. Decide what you would like to learn, read, do, and experience to become the right person. Set goals for sharing the Gospel with people, serving God faithfully, giving, and helping others—and then pursue those goals until they are fulfilled. Then set new goals! Proverbs 29:18, “Where there is no vision, the people perish….” Today’s average high school senior upon graduation has no idea what to be or do. This is is usually due to a poor walk with God. I'm not saying you have to know exactly what you are going to be or do; but start taking inventory of how the Holy Spirit has gifted you and check your desires to see if they line up with Scripture. Then be in ceaseless prayer and counsel from godly, Biblical authorities as you seriously consider the direction the Lord may be leading you.

9. Learn to be unselfish and submissive. Begin to live for others. Give other people their way in areas where it will not compromise Truth, just because you want to be nice. Think of others before yourself. This is what it takes to have a strong family someday.

10. Learn to be respectful and attentive. Build great listening skills in church, in school, or when another person is speaking.

Understanding the Early Years of Adulthood – Part Two

Your job—
Where will you work through young adulthood? Most people get some small job in high school that causes them to face a lot of life-shaping questions. Will you work on Sundays? So many young adults get so infatuated with getting their first few paychecks that they will kiss Sunday church goodbye for the first minimum wage offer that comes along. They love the sound of being able to say “I have to work.” There’s something very adult-ish about that.

How much is God worth to you? You’ll find out when you get your first job. I’ve seen dozens of teens set God aside for a few bucks with seemingly no thought of it. I’ve seen hundreds of others take their stand for God, and God always meets their needs—always—usually with better jobs! In the process, their faith grows, and a solid foundation of faith for future decisions begins to form.

So, if you don’t have a job, before you get your job, even if you have a job now, choose now to stay in church regardless. Starter jobs are easy to find. Good workers are hard to find, and God will provide better for you than you will for yourself. Keep Him first, and watch Him work it out. If you have a job now that requires you to miss Sunday church, talk to your manager, get your parent’s and pastor’s advice, and even consider putting in your notice if you have to. Put God to the test, and let Him prove Himself to you. Stepping out in faith is easier now than it will ever be, and you’ll need the valuable foundation of faith for bigger decisions in your future. In other words, learn to trust God with $6.50 an hour, and it will be easier to trust Him with $80,000 a year, when your kids will be watching you.

People who refuse to trust God when they are young never develop the foundation of faith that they need when bigger storms and harder tests come their way. Remember David and Goliath? David trusted God with the bear and the lion, which made it easier for him to trust God with Goliath. The same principle will work for you.

You’ve got to realize that you need church! It’s God’s ordained institution for meeting your spiritual needs. You cannot be right with Him if you are not faithful to a Bible-believing, Independent Baptist church. It’s simple, and it’s in the Bible. Hebrews 10:25 says, “Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.” What happens at church is what will keep you spiritually healthy and growing. You need church as much as you need your next meal—and a lot more than you need a paycheck.

On your job, will you stand for right? Will you laugh at dirty jokes and accept invitations to wild parties? Will you be a credible testimony for Christ, or will you quietly hide your Christianity for the myth of acceptance? What will you do for money? What will you do with your money? These values and more start coming into focus with the starting of your first job and will determine a wide variety of details about your adult life.

Most people believe that you just have to go through this “mistake zone,” (approximately ages 17 to 27) and you’ll learn the hard way. Of course, most young adults “box themselves in” by refusing to hear any advice from godly people who care. So, they are condemned to “learn the hard way.”

Honestly, adult life is a big enough adjustment, and there’s no sense in carrying baggage that you don’t have to carry. Over the next several posts I’ll examine each of the major decisions you’ll face in the upcoming years and try to grasp just what you’re up against.

Here are two BIG ONES:

College—This is probably your first major decision to conquer. Which one? What kind? Where? The college you choose will most likely lead to the person you marry, the career field you pursue, and the friends you keep. This will determine where you live, what you will do with the rest of your life, who you become like, and whose children you have. This will determine who your grandkids will be and who their kids will be…and so on. Whoa…big stuff. This is definitely a major decision that you want to get right!

Dating—What kind of person will you date? If “looks” are your primary criteria, you’re headed for a world of misery. (Although, I wouldn’t go so far as to tell you to marry someone ugly.) Believe me, when you meet God’s match for you, you’ll think this is the best looking person on the planet. That’s an easy one for God.

What guidelines will you follow in your dating life? Who will you give an account to? If you are “out from under” your parents, you need to give account to your pastor. How will you keep from ruining your testimony? Will your dating life reflect Christ and help you become a better Christian? These questions will formulate the basis for choosing a spouse, a life’s mate. This is huge!

Will you date a non-Christian? If God is real and your faith is real, then your family must be founded upon eternal values. God’s Word is the blueprint for the family and the glue that holds it together. If you don’t at least have true faith in common, you’re headed for sure disaster. God says in Amos 3:3, “Can two walk together, except they be agreed?” and 2 Corinthians 6:14 says, “Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?” By the way, don’t fall for the trap that you can date this person and win him to Christ. Win him to Christ, see him discipled to faithfulness—then date him. Very few people succeed with dating as an outreach. It’s never right to do wrong to do right.

How To Enjoy Your Summer

This is a message that I preached in chapel to help our students prepare for the summer months.
The principles in it would be good for all of us.
1. Schedule
Proverbs 6:6-11
6 Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise:
7 Which having no guide, overseer, or ruler,
8 Provideth her meat in the summer, and gathereth her food in the harvest.
9 How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard? when wilt thou arise out of thy sleep?
10 Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep:
11 So shall thy poverty come as one that travelleth, and thy want as an armed man.
Don’t sleep in!
Have a daily walk with God.
Be faithful in church attendance.
2. Uphold
Ezekiel 22:30
And I sought for a man among them, that should make up the hedge, and stand in the gap before me for the land, that I should not destroy it: but I found none.
Proverbs 4:23
Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.
Cell phones:
• 10 minutes a day of talk and text
• Never use in a room alone
• Never use a cell phone to call the opposite gender
• Give it to your parents every night by 10:00 p.m.
• Turn it off during church!
• Give it to your parents for a set time if you stumble
Obey.
Stay accountable.
Never watch TV without supervision.
Don’t access a computer without supervision.
Don’t access the internet without a safeguard.
3. Ministry
Hebrews 10:25
Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.
Attend everything—Sunday school, morning service, evening service, midweek service, youth activities, camp—everything!
Develop a walk with God.
Determine how much Bible reading and prayer you will do each day.
Scripture memorization:

• Work on the verses you know
Serve in a church ministry; get involved!
4. Mature
Luke 2:52
And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.
Read at least one good book this summer! (Get it approved by a godly authority.)
Learn something new.

5. Employment

Know Where You're Going

In November, 1975, seventy-five convicts started digging a secret tunnel designed to bring them up at the other side of the wall of Saltillo Prison in northern Mexico. On April 18, 1976, they tunneled up into the nearby courtroom in which many of them had been sentenced. The surprised judges returned all 75 to jail.

Many teens and young adults are like those convicts, they don't like a particular situation they are in so they just start digging with no, or little direction. They think that as long as they are not in the uncomfortable situation that they were in, they are safe. More often than not they end up back in the same situation only in worse condition. What you need to do is to humble yourself before God; He will guide you. Proverbs 3:5-6 says, "Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths." Like the Psalmist, you should exclaim to the Father, "For thou art my rock and my fortress; therefore for thy name’s sake lead me, and guide me."

When you follow God's guidance, you know you are where God wants you, whether you are moving or staying in one place. Instead of praying, "Lord, what do you want me to do next?" ask, "Lord, what do you want me to do while I'm right here?" Direction from God is not just for your next "big" move. He has a purpose in placing you where you are right now. This is especially important when considering God's purpose for you as He has placed you in a New Testament Baptist Church. It is important for you to understand God's purpose for your life as you hear and heed the preaching and teaching of His Word. It is also important to submit to His purpose.

Sometimes situations may be uncomfortable, but God makes no mistakes. He has a purpose and He uses the circumstances He places you in to bring you to spiritual maturity. Escapism is never the answer. Following God's principles is the only response that will lead to spiritual victory and freedom from the bondage of sinful reactions.

As my pastor used to say, "What happens to you is not as significant as what happens within you." Be sure your attitude and actions lineup with biblical principles rather than your feelings. Then you will experience the peace of mind that comes from a life of obedience to God, no matter what circumstances come your way. Don't just dig, dig with biblical direction and purpose. Freedom, true freedom will be the result.

Sell Out or Sold Out

I recently was on the hunt for a particular gift that I knew an individual needed. I jumped into my car and drove to a store where I just knew I could find this item. I searched the store high and low but was unable find what I was looking for. Finally, I broke down and decided to ask the sales clerk where I could find it. To my surprise, the clerk informed me that they were sold out. I left the store disappointed, but on the way home this thought came to my mind. What if every Christian were “sold out” for Christ? The Bible tells us in Matthew 22:37, “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.” A sold-out Christian is one who is emptied of self, one who gives his all for Christ. As a Christian young person, there are several areas where you can be sold out for Christ.
• Church house—The Psalmist said, “I was glad when they said unto me let us go unto the house of the Lord.” What is missing in this generation of teenagers is a commitment to the church house. We are told that 70% of teens who attend church never return to church after graduation from high school. What a tragic statistic! Though this may be said about some, I encourage you to be a young person who is “sold out” to the house of God.
• Clean living—It seems as though the world, the flesh, and the devil have launched every fiery dart at the Christian young person. We live in a day and age where holiness, righteousness, and clean living is mocked and criticized. It is going to take a “sold-out” young person to stand up for what is right.
• Commitment for Christ—I love the commitment of the Apostle Paul that is so evident when he tells us, “For to me to live is Christ and to die is gain.” If we are not careful, we are committed to sports, recreation, hobbies, friends, and relationships—but our commitment to Christ is sorely lacking in comparison.
As I thought of being sold out for Christ, I thought of so many Christians who instead choose to sell out. I am reminded of Judas who, for thirty pieces of silver, decided to sell out. The term sell out refers to the compromising of one’s integrity, morality, and principles in exchange for money, success, or personal gain. Many teens and young adults are compromising their character and conviction for the sake of convenience and comfort. Are you selling out in any of the areas listed above? Instead of being a teen and/or young adult who sells out, be a young person who is sold out for God.

How Long Is Your Attention Span?

A boy wnet to his father one day and said, with a slight whine in his voice, “Dad, can you make church not so long tonight?”
“Why?” his father asked.
“Because I always want to fall asleep!” was his honest reply.
His father answered, “Well, son, the people who come to church come to hear a message from the Bible, so I cannot promise that church will not be long.” Of course, “long” is a relative word anyway. The service lasts from 6:00 to 7:15 on Sunday nights. Shorter than a movie or a ball game, but nonetheless to a 4 year-old, it’s long!
About an hour later, the boy went to his father and said, “Did you decide yet, Dad?”
“Decide what?”
“If you could make church not so long tonight.”
“Well, I already answered you, son.”
“Oh.”
But apparently he heard what he wanted to hear and not what his father said. Later in the day he told his sisters, “Daddy is going to make church not be so long tonight.” One of the girls said to their father, “Is that true, Daddy?”
“Is what true?”
“Stephen said you’re going to make church shorter tonight.”
“No, that’s not what I told him.”

Apparently this boy had a serious case of “wishful thinking.” Now, I must stick up for him lest someone think he is a little heathen. He’s a very good boy. He loves all the people at church. But sometimes he gets really bored with the church service itself. It’s hard enough for any 4 year-old to stay interested in church, much less when the services are conducted entirely in a language that is not his own. So, I’m not concerned about the fact that he would rather be outside playing than sitting in church. But what I am concerned about is adult and teen Christians who are bored like this 4 year-old boy.

Don’t Be Bored with the House of God
I’m talking about those who drift in and out of sleep, count the number of light bulbs in the church, and draw in the songbook. I’m talking about the ones who have to leave the service talk on their cell phone. I’m talking about the ones who act like church is a religious duty which one must endure instead of a precious time of worshipping the God who loves them. Psalm 122:1 says, “I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the LORD.”

Don’t Be Bored with the Word of God
I wonder how many times we as Christians approach our Bible reading time with indifference, apathy, and a desire to “keep it short.” Or if we do not necessarily desire to keep it short, there is still oftentimes the lack of ability to focus. Sometimes the smallest of interruptions can get us off track! We should not read our Bibles like a bored 4 year-old. Psalm 19:10 says that the Word of God is more desirable than much fine gold and it is sweeter than honey! The Word of God is valuable beyond measure and has a sweetness that is without equal! We should read and study it as if we actually believed that.

Don’t Be Bored with the Blessings of God
When God’s grace and lovingkindness and His undeserved blessings become “ho-hum” to us, warning signals should go off in our heads. Psalm 126:3 tells us the kind of spirit we should have when we consider God’s blessings: “The LORD hath done great things for us; whereof we are glad.” Psalm 103:2 says, “Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits.” The Psalmist proceeds to itemize those benefits in the subsequent verses. I challenge you to read through Psalm 103 and then write down every single “benefit” that God has provided for you. It is stunning when you really stop to think about it. I don’t ever want to get over the manifold blessings of our gracious God.

I trust this thought will be a challenge to you to stay excited about the house of God, to stay focused upon the Word of God, and to continually stand in awe of the blessings of God. After all, we’re not 4 years old anymore.

It's Not Easy Being Dysfunctional

It might not be the easiest thing to accept, but you’re dysfunctional! Don't feel bad, so am I. When compared to the perfection of Almighty God, we all fit into the category of being dysfunctional. Thanks to the unmerited favor of God, through the blood of Christ, we have been made new (2 Cor. 5:17). However, we still struggle with the old nature. Because of that, we battle with that old nature. This can cause a lot of trouble, especially early in life.

Unless you're way ahead of your time, you probably still enjoy a good Bugs Bunny cartoon and a pop tart just like I do. As a teenager, or young adult, you know just enough about life to be dangerous! Everybody wants to feel like they've arrived when they turn 18. You can vote; you can drive; you can stay out late… The world says, “You are now grown up!” The reality is, you're just now getting really good at being a kid!

The problem comes when somehow you reason that all that you know now makes you ready for adult life. Maybe you assume that you've passed the tests, gained the credentials, and you're ready to sail. You think having been a successful kid makes you ready to be a successful adult, but nothing could be further from the truth! This being the case, I congratulate you on not being ready to be an adult. However, I also congratulate you - you need God, and He's ready to help!

You cannot survive the journey through adulthood without Him. God's best for your future starts at a point of need not a point of strength. If you view yourself in a position of strength; if you have the “I am my own man” disease, you are in for some serious disappointment. People like this spend a large portion of their life figuring out that they are not really as great as they think.

If, on the other hand, you view yourself in a position of need, if you see the decisions you face through the eyes of humility and sincerity, then you will be driven to the Lord, to His Word, and to His guidance through godly adult counselors. If you know that you need God, then He will be found, and His blessings will follow. God tells us in James 4:6, But he giveth more grace.
Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. He promises in Proverbs 8:17 I love them that love me; and those that seek me early shall find me.

Life is awesome! It really is great to be an adult and experience God's gifts day by day, but there are many risks. There are many ways to miss God's awesome plans for your future. That's why it is important for you to learn the lessons of spiritual growth and decision-making that will help you step-by-step through the decisions ahead.

I can't see your future any more than you can. The rules don't allow that. You have to choose to trust God and discover His good plan one day at a time as He reveals it to you.

3 Reasons to Give a Testimony

1. Give God the Glory
Many people today think as if God is dead because they never see Him at work in their life. When we tell others what God is doing in our lives, it shows them He is alive and still working today. Philippians 1:6 says, "Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:” If you have made a decision for Christ or God is at work in your life, speak up and let someone know. It will give God the glory for what He is doing.

2. Encourage the Church Family
Even good people get tired or discouraged. One of the most encouraging things is to hear how God is working in someone else. Psalm 107:2 says, “Let the redeemed of the LORD say so, whom he hath redeemed from the hand of the enemy.”

3. Making Public What God Is Doing in Your Heart Makes You Accountable
We have no problem making decisions known when we truly intend on keeping them. When we shy away from telling others about a decision we have made, it is usually a sign that we really have no intention of keeping it at all. Learn to embrace and value accountability.

Let me encourage you to speak up and make known what God is doing in your heart and life. Share it with others in your youth group or Bible study group. Share it with your pastor and church. When is the last time you spoke of His work in you? I encourage you to do so. It will not only encourage others, it will encourage you.

Three Ways Biblical Counsel Helps

Do you have a map for your life? Do you know where you are headed, why, and what the destination will be? Are you certain that your present decisions will actually lead you to the intended destination?
It’s amazing how few people view life with the end in mind. We sometimes fail to connect our present decisions and direction with their ultimate outcomes. So often, the outcomes are not what we intended, but after decisions are made, we are forced to live with the results.
The best way to reach your ultimate destination is to study the road-map and take the correct course. Life is no different. So, back to the original question— what is your map for life?
The fact is, there’s no better life-map than the Bible. It is God’s gift to the human race—a guidebook for life. In the Bible, God gives thousands of principles and laws for navigating through life successfully. It’s His instruction manual for how life is designed to work. The more you understand it and apply it, the better you are at discovering your true identity and your life’s calling or purpose. And apart from the Bible, we’re all destined to wind up disappointed and empty—still longing for real purpose and significance.
Here’s one really good example of a life principle from God’s Word: Get good advice for every major decision. Proverbs 11:14 states, “Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counselors there is safety.”
Now, a lot of people break this law and live to regret it. In other words, we don’t want advice.
Sometimes we fear that a counselor will have a private agenda and won’t counsel us honestly. At other times, we presume to know what our counselors will say, and we rationalize it away without even talking to them. But most often, we don’t get advice because we would rather not hear what we already know. Self-deception is a scary thing. We would rather be wrong and fantasize that things will work out, than really build a good decision with plenty of outside, biblical advice.
To our benefit, God instructs us to bring in godly, biblical counsel for our decisions. But I find that many people sell short good counsel. They don’t fully appreciate the value of good godly advice. There are three huge dynamics in play when getting counsel. It’s not merely about getting a “yes” or “no” on a particular decision. It’s bigger than that, so let’s break it down:
1. Biblical counsel helps define a right decision.
This is the first and perhaps biggest aspect of getting advice—just determining whether or not a decision is right. I would never make a major decision in life without a team of God-fearing people standing behind me saying, “Yes, that’s the right move!” It’s not about being unduly dependent upon others to make my decisions; it’s about having confirmation from the collective wisdom of successful people. It’s about finding someone who has taken this journey successfully and borrowing his map!
2. Biblical counsel helps to define the right process.
We often miss this. It’s very easy to do the right thing the wrong way! Getting biblical advice is a great way to put a plan together. It’s not enough just to do the right thing—it needs to be done the right way. A team of wise biblical advisors will help craft a plan of attack that will give the right decision with the right process.
3. Biblical counsel helps to define the right timing.
Finally, it’s possible to do the right thing the right way, but at the wrong time! For instance, a person might have found the right spouse and have a good plan for marriage, but the timing can be way off. Getting counsel is sometimes about waiting for God to show you His plan and timing. There are few things worse than forcing our own way too quickly. If this principle helps you, the good news is there are thousands more waiting to be discovered and applied to your life. They’re all in the Bible, and a good church family, Bible study class, and a godly pastor can help you begin the process of discovery!

The 10 Most Dangerous Years of Everybody's Life -

If you are between the ages of 17 and 27, you are living in the 10 most dangerous years of your life. One leading author in the area of student ministries calls this time period the "Mistake Zone." It is the time of life when almost all of your biggest decisions will be made, yet it is the time of life when you are the very least equipped to make those decisions. Sounds scary? You bet. Can you avoid it? Absolutely not! Welcome to the "Mistake Zone!"

Thankfully, you're not alone. But before you make major decisions, take a look around you at the landscape of people who have been through the "Mistake Zone." You will find casualties no matter where you look. You'll find unwanted pregnancies, abortions, and sexually transmitted diseases. You'll find drunkenness, drug abuse, and chain smokers. You'll find divorce, custody battles, and broken lives. You'll find relational abuse, substance abuse, and sexual abuse. You'll find bad credit, lost jobs, and bad investments. You'll find school dropouts, down-and-outers, and even up-and-outers. You'll find casualties on skid row and at the Ritz Carlton. No one is exempt from the pain and scars of the "Mistake Zone". Not even you.

So think about it. Here's a list of decisions that you will probably make between the ages of 17 and 27:

1. College
2. Dating
3. First Job
4. First Car
5. Friends
6. Career Field
7. Marriage
8. Career Location
9. Living Place
10. Children and Family
11. Church
12. Personal Walk with Christ
13. Life's Purpose and Mission
14. Financial Values

That's a pretty long list. Most of these decisions will be made over the next 10 or so years. These things are gigantic! Furthermore, you're just starting out with no way of really knowing for sure which way is right for your future. At first it seems odd that God would throw these things upon you so early in life. He knows you are not ready, but He put you here anyway. Makes you wonder what kind of sense of humor He really has doesn't it?

Be the Right Person (Guy/Girl Relationships)

It's not a Facebook group, but I'm a fan of "being the right kind of person in order to have the right kind of person."

The world's relationship model teaches young people to look for the right person. God's relationship model teaches young people to be the right person, then God will bring the right person to them. It's important for young people to learn God's model in order to spare them from the dangers and heartaches that the world's model will bring.

This past July at summer youth camp our student ministries director taught on the topic of guy/girl relationships. When the week was over, we heard comment after comment about how these young people had never heard some of the Biblical principles that were taught. You see, God's principle is a paradox. And it goes like this: finding the right person isn't about finding the right person - it's about becoming the right person.

Consider these contrasts between God's method and Hollywood's:

1. Becoming the right person places your hope in God. Trying to find the right person places your hope in another person.

2. Becoming the right person focuses on God's work in you. Trying to find the right person prevents God's work in you.

3. Becoming the right person makes you patient. Trying to find the right person makes you impatient.

4. Becoming the right person makes you strong. Trying to find the right person makes you weak.
5. Becoming the right person makes you spiritual. Trying to find the right person makes you self-centered and carnal.

6. Becoming the right person prepares you for the future. Trying to find the right person distracts you from growth.

7. Becoming the right person teaches you to trust God. Trying to find the right person teaches you to trust yourself.

8. Becoming of the right person brings spiritual growth. Trying to find the right person brings disappointment.

9. Becoming the right person settles your emotions. Trying to find the right person confuses your emotions.

10. Becoming the right person makes you want to stay pure. Trying to find the right person tempts you to lose your purity.

11. Becoming the right person I will make you a better spouse. Trying to find the right person will make you a worse spouse.

12. Becoming the right person will lead you to the right person. Trying to find the right person will lead you astray.

13. Becoming the right person places your emotional stability in God. Trying to find the right person makes you emotionally unstable.

14. Becoming the right person seeks love and acceptance from God. Trying to find the right person seeks the love and acceptance from people.

15. Becoming the right person makes God your strength. Trying to find the right person seeks strength from another person.

Someday, when you are married, following God's model will hold your marriage together, but following Hollywood's model will break it apart. I believe it is very important for young people and their parents to be willing to hear the Biblical counsel of godly pastors who know the precepts and principles on this topic. It is not worth the temporary satisfaction of pride to bring regret and possible destruction to the life of our youth. Young people need to pray daily for the wisdom of God, while refusing to trust themselves in this area, and seek godly counsel from the Word of God and the man of God.
